Maltida the Conquerer (well, perhaps she wasn't called that but she was married to William the Conquerer so I don't know what her last name would actually be...how about Matilda of Flanders) had this Abbey, called the Abbey of Women, built starting in 1062 (completed in 1130) as penance for their consanguine marriage (i.e., they were distant cousins). Matilda was subsequently buried here.
